Rise of the Barter Economy in Idaho

Short on Cash? Bartering Makes a Comeback!

General Information:

Bartering is trading things of value between individuals. You can trade your time and skills, crafts and handmade items, gardening and produce, and items you have used but don’t need anymore! You will be amazed at what people are willing to trade and barter!

Bartering promotes interaction between neighbors and creates a symbiotic and cooperative community. We encourage all attendees to barter, swap and trade. However, we do not discourage those who would prefer to pay in cash. It is up to each individual vendor whether they wish to sell goods or services at their booth for cash and it is between each seller and purchaser to decide on a fair monetary value for the goods or services. We ask that all attendees (vendors and public) be respectful of each other, the volunteers, the land, and our neighbors. Our hope is that everyone practices caring and conscious behavior to ensure the Market is safe and healthy for all who attend.

Our Market is free to all attendees, there are no booth rental fees or gate fees. There will be a monetary donation box at the gates which will help cover costs to run the Market, all profits from donations will benefit the Unlimited Learning Foundation.

Dogs are permitted on leashes only. If your dog is not social with people or other dogs…..do not bring it to the Market!  If your dog is not controllable on a leash…..do not bring it to the Market! Dogs that display aggressive behavior or are not controlled will be escorted out of the Market along with their owners. Please avoid this and make prior arrangements for your pets at home if you feel they would make the Market uncomfortable for others. Even though the Market is set in a rural location with plenty of green space and trees no one wants to walk around with doggy doo-doo on their shoes……… please be a responsible pet owner and clean up after your pets!

Cell phone service is available at most areas around the Market.

Absolutely no drugs or alcohol will be permitted. Please report any misuse to Market Volunteers and Security to handle.

A map of the parking, vendor booths, stage areas and arranged events will be posted at the main gates as you enter the Market.

The Location:

The location of the Haven Barter Market is 15 minutes off of Highway 53 between Rathdrum and Hauser Lake. It is located on a mountaintop with views from many locations. The road into the Haven is a steep grade dirt road so please plan ahead for travel time and proper vehicle maintenance (full tank, tire pressure, over-heating). The road is one lane with few pull offs so a broken vehicle will certainly cause a traffic jam.

Respect our neighbors and drive with consideration when arriving and departing from the Market. Obey posted speed limits and avoid excessive dust and noise.

There will be security, volunteers and first aid onsite at the Market from 7am until 7pm (or until all vendors and public have departed).

The Haven is located on 30 acres of land (mostly treed). Please respect our landowners around us and do not wander out of the designated Market areas.

Because there will be several vendor and musician areas, they are located throughout the property. Please expect lots of walking between vendor booth areas. Dress appropriately for the weather and for walking! Bring sunscreen and/or bug spray. We encourage tote bags or pull carts for carrying your goods. However, trails, roads and vendor areas are gravel and dirt so keep this in mind when choosing your carts!

Please secure your vehicles when they are parked in designated parking areas. Although there will be security onsite you are ultimately responsible for the safety of your belongings while at the Haven.

Absolutely no fires!

There is cell phone service at most vendor areas of the Haven.

There will be washroom facilities and water/wash stations at all sites. Please prepare to bring drinking water with you.

Pack it in…..Pack it out! Although there will be garbage receptacles available onsite we encourage all attendees to be mindful of their waste and plan to carry out your own garbage and recycling.

We encourage any feedback you may have but ask that you bare in mind that this is our 1st Barter Market at the Haven. Our intention is to have an annual Market and possibly hold future Markets over several days to include camping. With your help, we can build a long lasting, fun filled event that will grow to become a gathering of like minded community members who can continue their friendships and bartering beyond the boundaries of the Haven!

A map of the parking, vendor booths, stage areas and arranged events will be posted at the main gates as you enter the Market.

VENDORS:

Please take a few moments to read through the General Information on the Market as well as the following pertinent information:

There is no charge for booth space for vendors. But we do need to know how much space to mark off for you and other vendors so please call or email to reserve a space!  We would love to gather information on our vendors to know what type of goods and services you will be offering at your booth. This will assist us in the layout of the Market. You will be informed before the date of the Market where your booth will be located.

Our hope is that all vendors will barter and trade but we do not discourage vendors from taking cash payments as well. It is up to each vendor whether they will accept a monetary payment instead of barter for their goods or services.

Depending on how many vendors sign up there is the possibility of several vendor areas (refer to map of The Haven on our website). There will be washroom facilities and water/wash stations at all sites. Please prepare to bring drinking water with you.

You are responsible for everything at your vendor booth! There are no tables, chairs or tents supplied. Bring whatever you need to display your goods, be self-reliant and self-maintained! Take all garbage and recycling out with you to lesson the burden on the garbage containers on the site for the public.

Depending on the location of your booth you may end up in the sun/shade for parts of the day. Please inform us if you prefer to be in shade due to the items/goods you are displaying (ie. candles melting in the sun, food products in full sun without refrigeration). We will try our best to accommodate you but ultimately plan to bring what you need to avoid this.

The Haven is fully off-grid! There is no power available and generators will not be permitted. Bring ice if you require food items to be kept cold. Propane powered items are permitted (bbq’s, campstoves) if required for your booth. No open fires!

Many Barter Fairs are set up to allow vendors to park their vehicles within their vendor space. We would prefer that vendors set up their space and then park their vehicles in the designated vendor parking unless your vehicle is required as part of your booth. Please keep vehicles shut off whenever possible.

Vehicles will be allowed in to the vendor areas for set up and break down of booths only if necessary. After you have unloaded your items please move your vehicle to the vendor parking area. When the Market has closed at 5pm vendors will be allowed to bring their vehicles back to their booths for loading if necessary. If you can pack your wares in and out please do…this will lessen the vehicle traffic and congestion around the Market and avoid stirring up dirt and dust.

The location of the Haven is 15 minutes off of Highway 53 between Rathdrum and Hauser Lake. It is located on a mountaintop with views from many locations. The road into the Haven is a steep grade dirt road so please plan ahead for travel time and proper vehicle maintenance (full tank, tire pressure, over-heating)! The road is one lane with few pull offs so a broken vehicle will certainly cause a traffic jam.

Dress for the weather! In September (and at higher elevations) the weather can be warm during the day but cool in the evening when you are breaking down your booth space.

Gates will be open at 7am to allow for vendor setup. The Market will be open to bartering at 10am. All vendors should be set up and have their booth’s ready for the day by 9:45am. We encourage vendors to keep booths open (do not begin packing up) for bartering until 5pm when the Market ends. There will be plenty of time before dark to pack up your items and clean your area.

A map of the parking, vendor booths, stage areas and arranged events will be posted at the main gates as you enter the Market.

MUSICIANS:

Please take a few moments to read through the General Information on the Market as well as the following pertinent information:

Our goal with the musical portion of the Market is to encourage “casual” jam sessions at several locations throughout the Market. From 10am until 3pm there will be open mic/jam sessions at the stage areas…anyone can play and join in. During this time we will be creating a list of musicians who would like to be on a schedule to play from 3pm until 5pm at the main stage which will be a more structured setting.

The Haven is fully off-grid! There is no power onsite and generators are not permitted. This means that the music jam sessions are all acoustic!

We are promoting camaraderie within the musical community and encourage all musicians to jam with one another whether professional or amateur! This is a great opportunity to get to know fellow musicians and for amateurs to practice within a secure and inspiring environment and for all of us to learn from one another.

Our hope is that this will become a fun component of the Market where people can get together to enjoy making and listening to music.

We encourage all interested musicians to call or email to give us your name and let us know what you play. This will help us in organizing how many stage areas we need.

Please dress for the weather and for walking to and from different stages. There will be some chairs and stools provided at the stages but to guarantee one bring your own comfortable “portable” chair!

A map of the parking, vendor booths, stage areas and arranged events will be posted at the main gates as you enter the Market.
